Tips and Information For The Home

As we are now in severe weather season throughout the area. We wanted to provide you for a few things to watch for around the home to keep it better protected. These tips come from years of experience during these times and what we feel will help you at home.
  • ALWAYS BE PREPARED! NEVER TAKE A SEVERE WEATHER SITUATION LIGHTLY!
  • Check around the outside of the home for loose items and properly place them in a secure location.
  • Check and secure things around the home such as patio furniture, canopy's, trampolines, gazeboes, and children's toys. Secure to the ground or place elsewhere until the storm passes.
  • Check around the outside for tree limbs or trees that may need attention or possible removal.
  • Check your storm shelter access and be sure that it's cleared around it and ready for use in need of severe weather situations.
  • Be sure to have access in your home to your designated severe weather safe space usually in the centermost part of the home's interior away from doors and windows or in your home's basement area if applicable.
  • Pay attention to watches and warnings provided for your area. Watches are designed to be a heads up for homeowners that the potential for severe weather is possible so get prepared beforehand. Warnings are just that a "warning" that severe weather is likely and to be ready to go to your designated safe place inside of your home or storm shelter.
  • There are loads of tips and information online from the NWS (National Weather Service) website and other reputable online sources that can help determine what you may need when severe weather strikes in your area.
  • Always remember severe weather can cause damage to the home even when there are just strong winds being forecasted. Winds alone can knock down a tree or limbs. It can tear the roof from your home. It can bring down power lines in your area. It can take something small or large and toss it miles away or right into your home or even a neighbor's home if not secured beforehand.

Tips For Inside The Home

  • Test all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors every six months for proper function and change batteries during the check. Don't let a bad battery or detector be the reason you weren't ready for the emergency when it occurs.
  • Check your furnace filters at least every two to three months and change them when they are dirty. Be sure to get the proper size that fits most filters if not all have the size on it already making it easy to find. Filters help keep the home free of airborne germs and particles from the outdoors.
  • Check your water fixtures each month (sinks, tubs, toilets, etc.) for any possible leaks. It's always better to catch the problem before it can get worse.
  • Never throw anything other than toilet paper down the toilet. Toilet drains can be easily clogged especially drains that have been used for years without any maintenance prevention or cleanouts done. Flushing items (tampons, cigarette butts, paper towels, or even hair) in the toilets can cause serious backups in the home. You definitely don't want this to happen in your home!
  • Never pour grease down the drains. Grease hardens as it goes from hot to cold and inside of drainpipes this can be a huge problem and cause backups that cause lots of money and time to clean or fix due to the pipes being clogged with harden grease.
  • Don't plug in too many items into one outlet! This can cause the power to become unstable and pop a break or even worse possibly cause a fire! All electrical panels have breakers that are rated only so much power overloading these can cause serious problems in the home.
  • Inspect your window and door seals around the home. Bad seals can lead to warm/cold drafts and even water from the rain entering the home and causing further problems.
  • Check for foundations issues within the home as well as the outside of the home. Finding cracks early and getting them properly repaired, can help both the foundation from having further problems and keep the homes value in tact for years.

Tips For Outside The Home

  • Check your gutters and downspouts often for possible clogs or damage that can cause water to leak in or around the home. Water damage can be costly and checking these can help reduce the chances of damage to the home.
  • Be sure to keep any outside drains free from debris clogs as this can cause flooding and clogs in the outside drainage lines and can cause foundation damage.
